On a visit to Scotland, I was so entranced by the stunning landscape — the verdant greens of the hills, turquoise of the sea and white sand beaches, as well as the huge sky and endless clouds of every color.
I was particularly drawn to the Outer Hebrides — the Western Isles of Scotland — and began to wonder what it would be like to live in such a low-populated paradise. Then, I began to hear the stories of life in these islands– stories of fishermen and crofters, who have for generations lived on these islands with the struggle of supporting their families while fighting for their land and their lives. The winters are harsh and the work hard, but they stay, live, and die here because they love the islands.
‘Lay Me to Rest on the Hill by the Sea’ was inspired by these stories and a small cemetery that we stumbled across while out on the Isle of Harris. The effect it had on me was profound.
Fabric collage created with hand-dyed cotton fabrics, quilted with a variety of polyester and silk threads. The pieces of the collage are permanently fused and stitched, prior to quilting.
